A versatile, conservative route to a better smile.
What Is Composite?
Composite is a versatile material found across many industries — including dentistry. In the simplest terms, it is a polymer formed by linking small molecules together. The type of monomer used determines how the final composite looks and what it can do. Compared to other dental materials, composites are easier to shape and bond, making them less invasive and more cost-effective — though a little less durable than alternatives such as porcelain.
What Is Composite Bonding?
Have you ever considered changing the shape of your teeth, making them look whiter, or improving their alignment? Composite bonding could be the answer. The technique involves minimally reshaping the tooth before applying and sculpting composite material directly onto its surface — bonded in place, chairside, in a single appointment. It can also be used to repair chipped teeth or close small gaps.
Composite Bonding vs Porcelain Veneers
Composite is a more conservative alternative to porcelain veneers and offers good long-term results. Because it is moulded and shaped directly on the tooth, you have more control over the final appearance — and it can be completed in one visit. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory over two to three sessions: more durable, but less cost-effective. Both options can be excellent; the right choice depends on your wishes, your teeth, and your situation.

Advantages
- Versatile — the composite is moulded and shaped chairside to meet your specific wishes
- Minimal enamel damage — less invasive and requires less tooth preparation than other options
- Quick and convenient — most procedures are completed in a single appointment
- Cost-effective — generally more affordable than porcelain veneers
- Conservative alternative to porcelain veneers with good long-term results
- Can be repaired or adjusted easily if needed
Considerations
- More prone to chipping than porcelain — regular brushing and hygienist visits are essential
- A nightguard may be recommended to protect the bonding during sleep
- Less durable than porcelain — average lifespan of 3 to 10 years, though repairs are straightforward
- Not easy to remove — the original placing dentist may need to be involved in any reversal
