Periodontal disease — commonly known as gum disease — is a bacterial infection of the tissues that support your teeth. In its early form (gingivitis) it causes inflammation and bleeding; left untreated, it progresses to periodontitis, where the infection destroys the bone and ligaments anchoring your teeth. Most adults have some degree of gum disease, and many are unaware of it until significant damage has already occurred. For most patients, non-surgical therapy (root surface debridement) is the first and most effective approach, removing bacterial deposits from beneath the gum line under local anaesthetic. Where surgical intervention is required, this is planned and carried out with precision and careful follow-up.
