What Are Dental Nerve Injuries?

Nerve injuries can occur following dental extractions, implant placement, root canal treatment, or local anaesthetic injections — resulting in altered sensation (paraesthesia), numbness, tingling, or persistent pain in the face, lip, tongue, or chin. These injuries can be profoundly distressing and are frequently poorly managed.

Assessment & Diagnosis

We carry out detailed sensory testing to characterise the nature and extent of the injury. Understanding the type and severity of nerve injury is essential to determining prognosis and identifying appropriate management options — whether conservative, pharmacological, or surgical.

Rehabilitation & Support

For some patients, significant recovery is possible — particularly when appropriate management begins early. We provide sensory rehabilitation guidance, coordinate with microsurgeons where referral is indicated, and support patients through the process with honesty about what outcomes are realistic.
